Stomach
Ulcer Symptoms
There are many different
stomach ulcer symptoms that you may
experience if you have a stomach ulcer.
Stomach ulcer disease is a common disease
affecting millions of Americans yearly.
A
stomach ulcer is the erosion in the
gastrointestinal tract.
Stomach ulcers are
most likely to occur in people that drink
alcohol, smoke, take anti-inflammatory drugs
or feel stressed.
One of the most common
stomach ulcer symptoms is a gnawing, burning
sensation in the stomach area that can last
up to 3 hours. A lot of times this is
mistaken for heartburn, indigestion or
hunger pains. Most of the time, this pain
will occur after a meal and is usually
located in the upper abdomen. This pain can
usually be relieved by taking antacids,
drinking milk, and rest.
Another stomach ulcer
symptom is weight loss. Due to having
stomach pain, many times eating is avoided
due to fear of intensifying the pain.
Nausea and vomiting can
be another stomach ulcer symptom.
Black, tar like stools or
stools containing dark red blood if the
ulcer is bleeding can be a serious stomach
ulcer symptom and may require surgery.
Stomach ulcer symptoms
can be treated in a variety of ways. One of
the first treatments that your doctor may
prescribe is antacids. If antacids are not
helping your stomach ulcer symptoms then you
may be put on medication that can decrease
acid production such as Protonix.
A stomach ulcer can occur
when the protective lining of the stomach is
damaged. A medication called sucralfate is
often prescribed to help form a protective
barrier over the lining of your stomach.
It is also important to
eat balanced nutritious meals, learn how to
manage stress, limit alcohol, caffeine,
tobacco use and if possible
anti-inflammatory drugs.
You do not have to live
with stomach ulcer symptoms.
The tests needed to
diagnose a stomach ulcer may depend on your
symptoms and on a medical history and
physical exam. There are many different
treatment options that you and your doctor
can discuss to help alleviate your
stomach ulcer symptoms.
